Yesterday afternoon I was driving back to work from my doctor's visit. From the year 2000 to 2013 I may have visited a doctor's office three times. I have already been four times in 2014. What started as an ear infection due to our crazy weather this winter turned into a physical, medication and a lot of thinking about how badly I have been treating myself. It was a smart decision to actually go to the doctor. It was stupid that I waited so long. I'm two months away from turning 40. The closer I get the more things I start to ponder. It was a long ride back to work. I don't want anyone reading this get alarmed. I'm not dying or anything. Except for hypertension and the need to lose a few pounds I am relatively healthy.
Even without a checkup I knew I had fallen into a bad routine of doing the same routine every day that was going to lead me to keep getting heavier and less healthier. My routine is to get up really early, get dressed and go to work without eating breakfast. When I do eat breakfast it's always something heavy that I couldn't possibly burn off sitting behind a desk. After that I drink coffee right up to lunch time. Then I go to lunch and eat something heavier than the breakfast was. I work late, stop at the store to get something to drink, go home, do all the stuff I need to do in the evening and finally sit down for a break around 8:00PM. I'll usually fall asleep for about 45 minutes which energizes me so now instead of going to sleep for the night around 10:00, I am up until 1:00 AM or later having a drink and watching TV. Then, no matter how little sleep I got, I'm up on time again the next day and do it all over again. There's only so long you can do that before your body starts giving you warnings like ear infections or asthma problems. I got the message.
When your days are like mine you start losing the energy to do things like sit down and keep your blog updated. Hobbies are the first thing to suffer when you are stressed and tired because you can ignore them for awhile without any consequences. It's been four months since my last post and no one from Blogger has called me to find out when I am making another post like the student loan folks do when they want money.
It's not like the good old days when I first started blogging. People had to put a little effort into what they were doing. Now I can log in to Twitter and Facebook and get a thousand opinions in less than an hour. We are so overloaded with content that most likely hardly anyone will read this. That's good because now I can go back to posting stuff I like without caring who's reading. I want my hobby back.

It is very good to see this post! I always look to see if you're in my reader and today you are. Glad you went for the checkup. This is the year when I will be twice your age when you have your birthday and I have mine and I just want you to know the next forty years are huge! More interesting, productive and satisfying that the first forty (except for the kids, of course--that's the biggest thing of all). But it does depend on being sensible and following the major medical advice. This is also a good time of year to experiment with food. Try a couple of fabulous ripe tomatoes for breakfast, for instance, or a tomato and an avocado. We have such a luxurious food environment here it seems a shame not to explore it. As for that late night time, I have coveted those few hours all my life--they are when everyone has stopped needing things from me and I can enjoy my own thoughts. I'm retire now and I still like the late nights. Glad to see you back.
I'm glad to read you again too. sp
Hi Cliff,
Good to see you back.
Take care.
I'm also just a couple of months from 40 and I've been thinking about the same sort of stuff.
I just ran the CCC on Easter weekend and while I'm glad I finished, I was a full 20 minutes off of my best time. I know I'm older but I don't think I'm 20 minutes slower older.
Then I thought about it and figured maybe the sleeve of Ritz crackers with hogshead cheese wasn't the best training table option the night before.
If I look at my daily routine, it's not too different from what you just described. A lot of carelessness. A lot of stuff I don't need.
The dumbest thing is that this doesn't have as much to do with enjoying the wrong kinds of things as it is compromising for the sake of convenience.
Don't know what to do for dinner? Oh just order some crap and forget it. Ten years ago I might have eaten maybe three pizzas in a year. Now it's basically a staple.
I commute by bike a lot but I move less while at work than I used to. A lot of other small things are easier for an old married dude than they were for me when I was younger. But that's not necessarily a good thing.
Anyway I'm going to try to turn 40 in better shape than when I turned 39. But I also don't want to become one of the kale smoothie health nut people. Instead I'm going to try changing the little stupid things; less fast food, less TV, more regular sleep, for a few months and see how that works.
Anyway good luck to you. Glad you're not giving up your hobbies.
I love reading your blog! Hope you will keep writing. I recently found out I have hypertension and don't like it. But, I'm seriously thinking about joining a gym ($10. a month) and dropping some weight. You sound like you have a lot on your plate. But maybe you can squeeze in 30 minutes of exercise. Take good care of yourself, Cliff. You have a lot of people who love you/care about you.
What a amazing shared . I have completed reading your blog and i see its so nice . .
It is an excellent to see this post! I always look to see if you're in my reader and today you are. Glad you went for the checkup.
