the bucks are in the tourist economy , which pisses me off in a strange way because me and my wife both toil in this industry and make good money , yet we cant catch a break as home owners and tax payers to get our neighborhood back to pre katrina mode.

There are many programs that work with kids who are like Titus. My own grandmother abused me physically and verbally—regularly saying things like she wanted to drowned me and that I was evil and wouldn’t ever have any friends. She died when I was 8. My immediate family wasn’t much better—child protective services finally got involved when I was 9. Unfortunately, they didn’t stay involved. Fortunately, tho’, I had mentors outside my biological family. Be part of the solution. Get involved. Mentors DO make a difference.

I couldn't have put it any better Cliff!!! It pains me to know the same thing happens right hear in our city too often and just recently one was killed in what was called an attempt to serve a search warrant. I LOVE my black men and pray often for us. Having eleven brothers gave me an up close and personal relationship with racial profiling, being followed in stores, and more. I've often said that justice is only blind when it doesn't involve us.

Cliff, I feel you 100%. In the last two weeks two students have passed in the community that are connected to educators I love dearly. The loss of innocence for so many of our children leads to them engaging in adult behavior far too early and adopting adult stresses prematurely as well. And we wonder why they're so angry. They, like adults, are becoming numb to the chaos around them just to cope. But even in their numbness, deep beneath the surface they are in trial...and it's not fair. It pains me so much. All I want them to be is children and we are failing them as adults everyday by not making sure all of them have that chance.

I read Lucas began pre-production in 1988. It not only cost him a lot of money, it took twenty four years of his life to get it in the theaters this week.That's a lesson in how to commit to getting something done, I'd say.

Cliff, it's indeed a very fine line. My son will be 20 and I worry more than I've ever done. I'm just grateful that, he's pretty much a home body but,he knows the nuts out here are "trigger happy" and prepares himself mentally as much as possible. Truthfully, every single time he walks out of the door, I pray for his safety. As a parent, that's all I can do now.

YES. This. This *exactly*. Great post, Cliff. NOLA schoolswere some of the worst in the nation, if not the worst, before Katrina and that's why the state had to step in with the RSD. After the flood, the OPSB ABANDONED the schools and refused to reopen -- no one seems to remember this.

Charter school arguments on a nationwide scale are one thing, but if it's charter schools that get the job done here, then hell yes, bring on the charter schools. The local school system can put up or shut up.
